What a plan would pay of it

Three real certified plans, as examples, applied to the same published bills. The first two are the same plan bought with and without a deductible, which is the choice that decides most of what you pay. The third is a Standard Plan, which caps what it pays per item instead of covering the core benefits in full.

This plan states anaesthetist, theatre in words rather than a figure, so those items are left out of what the plan pays. The real figure is therefore no lower than the one shown.

How this is worked out

The bill is what the hospital published: no averaging across hospitals and no estimate. What a plan pays applies that plan's own filed limits to the two halves of the bill, a surgeon's fee being capped per surgery and room and board per day, then takes off any deductible. It is arithmetic on filed figures, not a quotation. A real claim depends on the case, on what the insurer accepts as eligible, and on the room you actually occupy.

Bills from the Pilot Programme for Enhancing Price Transparency for Private Hospitals, run by the Office for Regulation of Private Healthcare Facilities. Plan limits from each plan's certified Benefit Schedule.
